G20 Health Ministers meeting, Rio de Janerio, Brazil

The Global AMR R&D Hub was honoured to participate in last week’s G20 Health Working Group and Ministerial Meetings in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where world leaders reaffirmed their commitment to tackling urgent global health challenges, including antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The adoption of the Rio de Janeiro Declaration and the G20 Ministerial Declaration on Climate Change, Health, Equity, and One Health on October 31 sets a bold path forward, driving global health considerations into the coming year. We applaud the scale and ambition behind these commitments.

The Hub is grateful to the Brazilian G20 Presidency for the opportunity to contribute to discussions throughout the year, and for organising a dedicated session recognizing our progress since the G20’s call to action in 2017.

We welcome the commitments to promoting collaborative intersectoral and multidisciplinary actions to address knowledge gaps and tackle AMR, including encouraging R&D and for highlighting the key role of a number of organisations in the field, including the Hub: “We continue to support initiatives such as the Global AMR R&D Hub, CARB-X, GARDP and ICARS, as well as regional organizations that guide research, development and strategies to accelerate new AMR health technologies, alternatives to the use of antimicrobials, promote equitable access, global stewardship, and maximize public investment returns”

We commend the G20 Presidency’s leadership in establishing the Coalition for Local and Regional Production, Innovation, and Equitable Access, a significant step toward addressing global disparities in innovation and fostering an equitable, sustainable system.

Turning global commitments into impactful action is essential. This will be a focus of the upcoming 4th Global High-Level Ministerial Meeting on AMR in Jeddah, where we’re excited to host a breakout session on Innovation on November 14.

As South Africa assumes the G20 presidency next year, and as a new Hub member, we look forward to supporting ongoing efforts to advance global health resilience
