Building a New Innovation Ecosystem for Antimicrobial R&D
From 4–5 March 2026 in Tokyo, Japan, interdisciplinary stakeholders convened to explore how AMR R&D can be strengthened through more effective models of collaboration, innovation, and incentive structures.
The workshop, Building a New Innovation Ecosystem for Antimicrobial Research & Development, brought together experts from academia, policy, industry, and global health to examine structural gaps in the current system and identify pathways to accelerate meaningful innovation. Discussions centred on how AMR R&D can move beyond traditional models and be better embedded within health systems, supported by open science, and aligned with equitable access.
Through interactive sessions and scenario-based group work, participants co-developed practical approaches to:
* Strengthen and diversify incentives for AMR R&D
* Better integrate innovation into health systems
* Translate open science into real-world antimicrobial products
* Foster more sustainable and collaborative R&D ecosystems
* Reframe antimicrobials as global public goods
Frank Tu from the Global AMR R&D Hub attended the meeting.
