Reflecting on a pivotal moment: UN High-Level Meeting on AMR!
The UN General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) took place on September 26th, at UNGA 79 in New York, marking only the second time world leaders have united at this level to confront the global threat of drug-resistant infections.
AMR knows no borders, and no single country can solve this crisis alone. This meeting was a crucial opportunity for global leaders to take collective action against AMR, which endangers global health, food security, and the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The meeting led to a political declaration where world leaders committed to:
- Urgent global action to address AMR, including a target to reduce the global deaths associated with AMR by 10% by 2030 and a target of USD 100 million to ensure at least 60 per cent of countries have funded AMR plans by 2030.
- Boosting R&D for vaccines, diagnostics, and antibiotics, particularly in developing countries.
- Driving solutions through innovative financing and public-private partnerships
- Integrating AMR research into national action plans.
- Acknowledging the private sector’s role in developing affordable medicines and ensuring equitable access
- Promoting global solidarity and cooperation for sustainable progress
We were proud to have had our Hub Secretariat Director, Dr. Lesley Ogilvie, represent us at this important event. We commend the global commitment to AMR and remain optimistic about the future progress ahead.
