A One Health Framework for Stewardship Across the Antimicrobial Lifecycle

We are pleased to share a new open-access publication in Communications Medicine (Nature Portfolio): “A One Health framework for global and local stewardship across the antimicrobial lifecycle.”

Developed through the AMR Multi-Stakeholder Partnership Platform Action Group on “Stewardship Across the Antimicrobial Lifecycle: A One Health Approach,” the paper brings together experts from human, animal, plant and environmental health, alongside policymakers, researchers and the private sector.

The authors—including the Hub’s Lesley Ogilvie—propose a practical One Health framework to strengthen stewardship across the entire antimicrobial lifecycle, from research and development to use and disposal.

The framework is built around four key pillars:

  • Prevention – reducing the need for antimicrobials through good health and hygiene practices

  • Innovation – supporting research and new solutions

  • Access – ensuring availability and equitable use where needed

  • Care – promoting responsible use and safe disposal

Together, these elements offer a roadmap to turn global commitments on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) into concrete, coordinated action.
