The Hub was delighted to participate in the 8th AMR Conference in Basel, as well as host a thought provoking session on ‘How can AI foster prevention and smart use of antibiotics in a One Health world?’ – moderated by the Hub’s deputy director Ralf Sudbrak.

The expert panel explored the numerous possibilities, challenges and opportunities in the field from data to equity:

➜ Muna ABU SIN (Robert Koch Institute): “AI is here to stay and we should explore and exploit it to co-design future options”

Thomas Van Boeckel (ETH Zürich): “Before use of text mining and spatial interpolation we need hard data: AI will not generate more surveillance data out of thin air.”

Lara Urban (Helmholtz Munich): “We can integrate genomic data to retrospectively show that certain AMR outbreaks could have been predicted from this genomic data. Now we need to start being prospective about it”

➜ Ramanan Laxminarayan (One Health Trust): “If we separate the decision on who gets antibiotics much more based on machine learning tools… we might have a much better chance at stewardship”
