Hengstberger Symposium – “Update on antimicrobial research: Joint struggle against the silent pandemic”

The Global Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Research and Development (R&D) Hub’s Usha Lamichhane attended the Hengstberger Symposium “Update on antimicrobial research: Joint struggle against the silent pandemic” held on March 17-19 in Heidelberg, Germany. The Global AMR R&D Hub provided an overview of the global funding landscape of AMR R&D and major funding mechanisms in place across the value chain highlighting the data collated in the Hub’s Dynamic Dashboard.

The challenges in the translation of academic research to preclinical studies were highlighted, as well as the necessity of the funding mechanisms in place to support this transition, eg. INCATE who focus on supporting innovators to take their ideas from academia and advance them into investable ventures.

The event, organised by Jun.-Prof. Dr. Philipp Uhl and Florian Umstätter from Heidelberg University, brought together a diverse group of academic researchers working in basic research and early discovery of various novel therapeutic approaches against the ever-increasing antimicrobial resistance crisis. In-depth insights on the discovery and development pathway of antibiotics were provided by representatives with experience in both academia and industry.
